Hello! I’m Teacher Austin, an experienced and dedicated educator based in South Korea. Over the years, I’ve taught all age ranges, and I’m now excited to begin a new chapter with you at BritMates. I graduated Kent State University in 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and English Education. I also attended Soonchunhyang University in Asan, South Korea. I’m helping students master English or navigate life skills, I strive to build trust, curiosity, and confidence in every lesson. I specialize in developing students’ writing, reading, and critical thinking skills through a blend of classical literature and creative instruction. I have taught business English, classical British and American literature, writing, and even Mom’s English classes to help parents better understand their child’s English education.

저는 2019년에 미국 켄트 주립대학교(Kent State University)를 졸업했고, 영어교육(ESL)과 영어교육학을 전공했어요. 또 한국 아산에 있는 순천향대학교에서도 공부한 경험이 있습니다.
저는 영어 실력을 키우는 건 물론, 실생활에 도움이 되는 표현과 스킬도 함께 가르치고 있어요. 수업에서는 항상 신뢰, 호기심, 자신감을 바탕으로 학생들과 소통하려고 노력하고 있고요. 고전 문학과 창의적인 수업 방식을 통해 읽기, 쓰기, 비판적 사고 능력을 함께 키워나가는 걸 좋아합니다.
비즈니스 영어부터 영미 고전 문학, 작문 수업, 그리고 부모님들을 위한 Mom’s English까지 다양한 수업을 진행해 왔어요. 자녀의 영어 교육을 이해하고 싶어 하는 부모님들께도 큰 도움이 되었죠.

British English is the dominant standard in many parts of the world, especially in Europe, the Commonwealth, Africa, and parts of Asia. This can give students an advantage when pursuing international tests or programs. British English also more matches the sounds of the Korean language than American English. With its soft R’s and the melody more similar to the Korean language, students will have an easier time producing British English more than American. Also, British English focuses more on long and clear vowel sounds than American English, matching more to the Korean language as well.
When you learn English, the most important thing is to create. Using English in the real world is the most important way to become a good English speaker. Whether a student is writing stories, recording speaking tasks, or joining conversations, the most important thing is production in meaningful ways. Even though we are online, active participation and real-world feedback are still possible. The more you use English to express yourself, the faster you’ll improve!
영국식 영어는 유럽, 영연방, 아프리카, 아시아 일부 지역 등 전 세계 많은 곳에서 표준으로 쓰이고 있어요. 그래서 국제 시험이나 해외 프로그램을 준비할 때 유리할 수 있죠. 또, 영국식 영어는 미국식 영어보다 한국어 발음에 더 가까운 부분이 많아요. 부드러운 R 발음과 멜로디가 한국어와 비슷해서 학생들이 발음하기 더 쉬운 편이에요. 특히, 영국식 영어는 길고 명확한 모음 발음을 더 중요하게 생각하는데, 이 부분도 한국어와 잘 맞는 특징이에요.
영어를 배울 때 가장 중요한 건 직접 만들어보고, 써보는 거예요. 실제 상황에서 영어를 사용해보는 게 영어 실력을 키우는 최고의 방법이에요. 이야기를 써보거나, 말하기 과제를 녹음하거나, 대화에 참여하는 등 실제로 표현하는 활동이 정말 중요하죠.
온라인 수업이라고 해서 소극적으로 할 필요는 없어요—오히려 온라인에서도 적극적으로 참여하고, 실질적인 피드백을 받을 수 있어요! 영어로 자신을 표현하는 시간이 많아질수록, 영어 실력은 훨씬 더 빨리 늘 거예요.
My most memorable experience comes from one of my trips to China. I visited Yanji, a small city in northeastern China near the border with North Korea. We had some free time before our bus to Baekdusan, so we decided to get some coffee at the Starbucks in Yanji Department Store.
Despite it being Chinese, Yanji is mostly populated by Koreans called Joseonjok. Sitting in Starbucks, I heard 3 different types of Korean: a group of college students to my left chatting in Yeonbyeon dialect, two young women in their 20s behind me chatting in Pyongyang dialect, and three businessmen in front of me speaking Seoul dialect.
Each voice came from a Korean, but all three versions were very similar, but also very different. In that one Starbucks, three Koreans met. This moment reminded me of how language is more than communication: it is memory, culture, and community. I did not need a tour guide at that moment. I just needed a cup of coffee and two open ears.
제가 가장 기억에 남는 경험은 중국 여행 중 하나에서 있었어요. 중국 북동쪽, 북한과 가까운 옌지(延吉)라는 작은 도시에 갔었는데요.
백두산으로 가는 버스를 타기 전까지 시간이 좀 남아서 근처 옌지 백화점 안 스타벅스에서 커피를 마시기로 했어요.
중국 땅이지만, 옌지는 대부분이 조선족(중국 내 한국계 민족)이 살고 있는 도시예요. 스타벅스에 앉아 있는데, 제 주변에서 들리는 한국어가 정말 인상 깊었어요.
왼쪽에서는 대학생으로 보이는 친구들이 연변 사투리로 떠들고 있었고, 뒤쪽에서는 20대 여성 두 명이 평양 사투리로 대화를 나누고 있었어요. 그리고 제 앞쪽에는 세 명의 남성이 서울말로 진지하게 이야기하고 있었죠.
세 그룹 모두 한국어를 사용하고 있었지만, 말투와 억양, 단어 선택이 모두 달랐어요. 그 스타벅스 한 곳 안에서, 세 가지 다른 한국어가 동시에 울려 퍼졌던 거예요.
그 순간 저는 문득 느꼈어요. 언어는 단순한 소통 수단이 아니라, 기억이고, 문화이며, 공동체 그 자체라는 걸요. 그 순간엔 관광 가이드도 필요 없었어요.
따뜻한 커피 한 잔과 열린 두 귀만 있으면 충분했죠.
