Hello! My name is Randall. I am an English tutor with about five years of teaching experience in Korea, including teaching online for two years. Most of my experience is with adults. My students have come from every level and background. Some were complete beginners getting ready for a first business trip. Others were advanced speakers who wanted to sound more natural. My specialties are conversational English and interview practice, including mock interviews and Q&A. Students usually tell me two things. I love comparing British and American English, especially the vocabulary. The differences between them are like a small history lesson. For example, British English says “autumn” and American English says “fall.” Both words were used in England 400 years ago. Britain slowly stopped using “fall,” but the settlers who sailed to America kept it. So an “American” word is really an old British one! Here is another example. Americans say “cookie,” from the Dutch word koekje, because Dutch settlers founded New York. Britain kept “biscuit” from French. Two hundred years of separate history are hiding inside these simple words.
This is why I never worry when a student mixes the two. The differences are small, and you can learn them one at a time. So when you meet a new word, ask me where it came from. A word with a story is a word you remember.
저는 영국 영어와 미국 영어를 비교하는 것을 좋아하는데, 특히 어휘를 비교해 보는 것을 좋아합니다. 두 언어의 차이점은 마치 짧은 역사 수업 같아요. 예를 들어, 영국 영어에서는 "autumn"이라고 하고 미국 영어에서는 "fall"이라고 합니다. 두 단어 모두 400년 전 영국에서 사용되었죠. 영국은 서서히 "fall"이라는 단어 사용을 멈췄지만, 미국으로 건너간 정착민들은 이 단어를 계속 사용했습니다. 그러니까 "미국식" 단어가 사실은 오래된 영국식 단어인 거죠! 또 다른 예를 들어볼게요. 미국인들은 네덜란드어 "koekje"에서 유래한 "cookie"라고 하는데, 이는 네덜란드 정착민들이 뉴욕을 세웠기 때문입니다. 영국은 프랑스어에서 유래한 "biscuit"을 계속 사용했습니다. 이처럼 단순한 단어들 속에 200년이 넘는 역사가 숨겨져 있는 거죠.

My favorite memory in Korea actually starts in America, with my dog. His name is Huxley and he is a Shetland Sheepdog, or a “Sheltie.” Shelties are the best — very smart and very cute. I got him from a breeder when he was a puppy, and when I decided to move to Korea, I made sure he came with me. The paperwork was the hard part. I drove across California just to get the right stamps on a few forms, and I paid extra so that he could fly in the cabin, right in front of my seat.
Unfortunately, arriving at Incheon was a nightmare! It was my first time outside the USA, I was lost, and a bus refused to let us on. I almost gave up. Then a kind Korean man saw that I was in trouble and helped us find a dog-friendly taxi. We moved to Cheonan, and Huxley became a local celebrity there. I took him everywhere: parks, outdoor cafes, and local bars. Neighbors would spot him from far away and shout “Huxley!” and then run over to play with him. He is really the main character. I am just the guy who walks him!
한국에서의 가장 소중한 추억은 사실 미국에서 시작된 제 강아지 이야기입니다. 이름은 헉슬리이고 셔틀랜드 쉽독, 줄여서 셸티라고 해요. 셸티는 정말 최고예요. 아주 똑똑하고 귀엽거든요. 어렸을 때 브리더에게서 데려왔는데, 한국으로 이사 가기로 했을 때 꼭 데려가고 싶었어요. 서류 작업이 제일 어려웠죠. 몇몇 서류에 도장을 받기 위해 캘리포니아를 가로질러 운전했고, 헉슬리가 기내에 제 앞 좌석에 앉을 수 있도록 추가 요금도 냈어요.
하지만 인천에 도착해서는 굉장히 어려웠어요! 미국 밖으로 나간 건 처음이라 길을 잃었고, 버스는 아예 태워주지 않더라고요. 거의 포기할 뻔했죠. 그때 친절한 한국 아저씨가 제가 곤경에 처한 걸 보고 강아지 동반 가능한 택시를 찾아주셨어요. 우리는 천안으로 이사했고, 헉슬리는 그곳에서 유명인사가 되었죠. 공원, 야외 카페, 동네 술집 등 어디든 데리고 다녔어요. 이웃들이 멀리서도 헉슬리를 보고 "헉슬리!" 하고 소리치며 달려와서 같이 놀아주곤 했어요. 그가 진짜 주인공이에요. 저는 그냥 그를 안내하는 사람일 뿐이죠!
