In my opinion, British English has several merits compared to American English, particularly in terms of clarity, tradition, and global recognition. British pronunciation, especially Received Pronunciation, is often considered clear and well-articulated, which can be helpful for learners when developing listening and speaking skills. Another advantage is its strong connection to the historical roots of the English language. Many learners and institutions view British English as more formal and traditional, which can be beneficial in academic, professional, and international settings. Additionally, British English is widely used in education systems around the world, especially in Europe and Asia, making it highly relevant for students preparing for exams such as IELTS. That said, both British and American English are equally valid, and the most important goal is effective communication. I always encourage students to be consistent with one variety while also being aware of the differences.

One fond memory I have is teaching a beginner student who initially struggled to form even simple sentences. At the start, he was very shy and lacked confidence in speaking English. Over time, through consistent practice and encouragement, I saw a big improvement—not just in his language skills, but also in his confidence. After a few months, he was able to hold basic conversations and even started expressing his own ideas more freely. I still remember the moment he told me, “Teacher, I can speak now,” with a big smile on his face. That experience was very meaningful to me because it reminded me why I love teaching. Seeing a student grow, gain confidence, and achieve their goals is one of the most rewarding parts of being an English teacher.
